Walberton Parish Council is looking for new Parish Councillors – somebody who has local knowledge, history of the parish, has an interest in the environment and is keen to work with the Team. As a Parish Councillor you can make a huge difference to the quality of life of local people and how local issues are dealt with.
We currently have three vacancies on Walberton Parish Council and are now inviting applications from local people to join the Parish Council.
In terms of eligibility, you must be a British, Commonwealth or European Union citizen, over 18 years old and registered to vote in the area; or have lived, worked, or owned property here for at least 12 months.
Responsibilities of the Parish Council
The Parish Council is responsible for implementing and maintaining parish assets such as the play areas, playing field, village pond, tennis courts, allotments, open space and orchards to name a few. It also determines how much money to raise through the council precept to deliver these services to the residents of the parish.
What kind of person do we need?
You should have an active interest in local issues and things that affect local people and a willingness to represent the views of the community.
What does the role involve?
Attending council meetings and committee sessions, often monthly, to discuss and vote on local issues. Addressing residents’ concerns and supporting local groups. Acting as a consultative voice on planning applications, crime prevention, and service improvements, influencing decisions made by higher authorities.
Training
Parish councillors can receive free training to help them take on the role effectively. This training covers the council’s business and decision-making processes, ensuring councillors are well-prepared to represent their community and make informed decisions. Additionally, councillors can also access free courses to further develop their skills and knowledge in specific areas of interest.
Time Commitment
Parish Councillors typically attend a Full Council and a Committee meeting every month. A meeting usually last about 2 hours. There can be additional responsibilities, such as committee work, site visits, or community events which may require 1–2 hours per week. The total commitment varies depending on the councillor’s interests and the council’s workload.

In your email/letter you may wish to include your connection to the parish, why you want to be a parish councillor and what skills / experience you can bring to the Council. Applications will be looked at by Councillors and voted on at a meeting of the Council. You will be invited to attend and say a few words to the Councillors.
